Dungeons & Dragons (DnD)

Might buy the 2024 PHB just because it seems like a nice object? I think?

Turns out people REALLY want to play D&D (this has only been up since 9:30ish last night).

Also turns out people are way too comfortable telling strangers that they’re a furry…

So many people who sound great though. Feel really bad

(Although given I’m likely to start out ROUGH it might be a blessing to not get picked)

Blimey, sorting through that many responses sounds like a bit of a nightmare!

If you’re nervous about a potentially rough start, have you tried DMing a one-shot session as a bit of practice?

Session 0 starting next week so last couple of weeks have been non-stop world building.

Have played around with a world map and it turns out they are HARD and also I don’t understand how geography works

This is the best I’ve got so far but so much that needs filling in and I just can’t get the gradient between terrain types right.

And yes, I have three approaches to naming places:

  1. Take part of a relevant word from Latin or Ancient Greek and garble it
  2. Smash random letters and then stuck some vowels in as needed
  3. Something really cliche in English*

*I mean, er, common

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I reckon 90% of fantasy worlds don’t really give a shit about Geography in the social science or geological sense, and just plonk stuff where it will give a cool setting for a scene or just look good on their map.

Okay, if world maps are challenging, town maps are something else entirely :sob: :sob: :sob:

Just another two thirds of this bloody city to go. And this one is supposed to be about a third to a quarter of the size of the two bigger ones

Think when I get to those ones I’m just going to do a city centre area and just put some arrows around it saying “houses and stuff” because who can be fucked with this, seriously.

Probably worth remembering that unless you’ve got stuff planned for every house on every street, you could just do landmarks - the rough pub/ the fishing centre/ the papier mache cafe/ the library etc.

Would have made much more sense and be far easier for the players. But feel kind of stuck with it now. Will probably just duplicate the rest of the residential streets and reangle them slightly.

Was thinking of doing maps for the taverns, temple and council hall but absolutely fuck that. There’s probably some tavern ones I can steal from somewhere and they can imagine the rest

Also absolutely none of it is to scale but I really need to do something about the size of those harbour walls :man_facepalming:

Something very poetic about @Maps liking this

It looks great. Hope it all goes well!

Are you using world anvil?
Here’s a couple of maps my pals and me use for the fictional world we inhabit, a few ideas for layout of towns that may not be the usual too.
The first one is a town of druids basically, that stay in their own circles so instead of streets it’s like a festival with camps over several fields

I’m not - have been doing it all with Inkarnate, but will definitely have a look at what I can steal/adapt!

Session 0 tonight :scream:
