Right enough.
My partner is ill so I went into town to entertain myself. Eleanor Morton the highlight. Ta to folk in here for the Vix Leyton recommendation, which was also good fun (The HTDO scale should be more widely known, and I’m now a proud owner of a poor quality, historically petty tote bag thanks to my donation). I finished off with Zoe Wohlfeld’s Dog Funeral which had a terrifying amount of audience interaction for my introverted mindset, but the shitting on everyone’s emotions at the end more than made up for it. I feel like she has enough of a Kristen Schaal-ish spark that she might end up on telly soon enough.
Going up bank holiday weekend. So far got booked: Prophets, Paul Foot, John Robertson’s Dark Room, Mark Watson, Chris Turner and the Underground Monk Show
If anyone is feeling brave and wants a Proper Fringe Experience, go to Mark Dean Quinn Tries To Walk Toward a Flipchart.
Ideally, go in totally blind — just go to Banshee’s Labyrinth at ~1am (it starts at 1:50am but it’s a tiny room and there will be a queue)
If you aren’t going to go, or want to know more, I’ve spoilered this write up. It’s genuinely one of the best Fringe shows I’ve seen. I think most people would hate it.
There was a full house of about 40, the concept was this guy walks from one side of the stage to the other and then the show ends. But he had all sorts of arbitrary rules like if anyone laughed it was back to the start, and he also made no real attempt to make it until like a good hour into the show where he just made it, and then the show turned into a modified rerun of his previous show where he ate a load of cheese but this time the cheese was replaced with lettuce as his body could no longer handle all the cheese. The conceit was that there was a leaf of lettuce that belonged to an audience member (but not really) and he’d test each leaf by eating it to see if it was the right one (which it never was) until the final leaf of the show, which was roughly 3:45am, by which point half the crowd were gone but the remaining crowd were absolutely loving it. Proper cult vibes by the end of it, everyone had maybe gone a little mad but it was incredible.
One nice thing is even with the length, he made a big point of you being able to take a break or go to the bar or whatever at any point, you just had to pat yourself on the head on the way out so he knew you were coming back and not to give your seat away to the people waiting outside on the queue.
I think it has a big cult following, a group in the audience had been to see it 10 times.
I love the Fringe.
Glad you enjoyed Chief Petty Officer! I also have the tote bag, I went to an alldayer yesterday and drunkenly attempted to explain the story of Ea-nasir and his shonky copper to a number of people ![]()
I’d heard that story a while back and then found myself at the cuneiform tablet section of the British Museum and was very excited to see the actual Ea-nasir tablet in real life. Unfortunately the next time I went, it had been removed temporarily for study
Thanks for recommending this, had a lovely old time. Really good stuff.
