shit, you are of course correct and that may be the reason he’s not been mentioned thus far

my bad, I watched the film a couple of weeks ago and I guess the impression of all of those recordings from Paris Olympia & him being man-of-the-people kind of naturalised him in my head and erased all the Brussels catholic school beginnings

In his place then I’ll put the grandfather of all the troubadours George Brassens - without whom there’d be no Jake Thackray, Cornelius Veeswijk and all the other European folk poets of that ilk

Am going to be rude and share some ace French pop ye!ye!

Nearly made the same mistake with The Young Gods, for shame

That’s a shame especially as you speak the language and have lived there. I like a fair bit of French music despite not speaking a word. But it’s very much filtered, it’s difficult to engage properly in the current music scenes in other countries.

One thing I do know about the current music scene in France though is that it is dominated by and absolutely pushing forward culturally in terms of hip hop so, given the one group you do like, I am sure there really is potentially a treasure trove of music you’d love.

you decided, wasn’t it?

not sure why you’re mentioning these countries, when say four people i think have called for mali individually. we’re going round in circles. presumably you don’t have time to do every single european country, either, yet you aren’t doing that as a continent.
i think a problem with it is that, say iceland is a predominately white population that gets treated separately by you and, say nigeria is a predominately black population that gets lumped in with an entire massive continent. this trend continues…

i think this way is a shame, given that the whole thing seemed to be about broadening horizons.

obviously it’s clear i think this is a bad idea, not just because of the lumping africa together- top 5’s are bitesize and easier for people to do. pretty sure that anything higher, 6, 10, 20 will be a more offputting task for most people.

you’re not using this logic for europe, australasia.

I am, but not so much house or techno. Would be dead interested to hear even within these genres if there’s anything in particular that is a big ‘innovation’, a big deal, or whatever. Sorry I’m knackered and the words aren’t coming out exactly right.

Yeah. It’s been years actually since I checked any of it out, and maybe I should. US hiphop has been great over the last ten years and i drifted away from French hiphop in about 2013. Maybe a lot of the US thing has filtered through.

You got bored so thought you’d dissect everything I said. It’s pretty disheartening when all I’m trying to do is highlight world music. I was enjoying this but the fun is eroding. I’m bowing out from this kind of thread for a bit.

This seems to be a really weird misconception when it comes to France. Not a dig at you personally - I’ve heard or read something similar so many times, and a lot of the music press seem to use French music as the butt of jokes as much as anything else - but I’ve got no idea why people say this. There are so many amazing artists ./ bands from France it’s not even funny.

I can honestly only conclude that if someone can’t find examples of amazing French music, then they can’t be looking particularly hard
