Good albums that aren't on streaming

Monks - Black Monk Time

Seminal proto-punk from '66. I was shocked to find this one wasn’t anywhere when I went looking today.

Yoga’n’ants - Bethlehem, We Are On Our Own

A personal favorite of mine. Takeaki Omori of 90s indie jpop group Citrus hit the studio in 2007 and pulled this little gem of whispered French jazz out of nowhere, then seems to have quit music altogether and just does graphic design stuff now.

Weakling - Dead As Dreams
One of the great black metal albums of all time and foremost among the many fine victims of the tUMULt label going down. 76 minutes of perfect howling anguish.

Looks like Spotify is missing a bunch of his stuff prior to 2005 or so. Youtube music has them though.

Just rewatched Old Joy on Tuesday. Love Will Oldham.

The big four for me, chronologically:

The Smashing Pumpkins - Machina II

Zwan - Mary Star of the Sea

Billy Corgan - The Future Embrace

The Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist
This one’s not even on Youtube anymore, ugh, so here’s the Tarantula video.

All four are outstanding.

oh yeah, they went big with that one. the new drummer they brought in seemed to take them that way

you listened to the earlier stuff at all?

Don’t think so, don’t recognize the covers at least.

it’s funny, it sounds pretty classic rock compared to their 90s output, but it’s so, so powerful and satisfying in being like that

oh nice!

well, their earlier stuff is a super twisty/turny take on noise rock

nobody else really sounds that much like them

‘Exploded Drawing’ is probs the best place to start, imo, but also this ^ EP. it’s all good, though

kind of like a funhouse mirror Sonic Youth, with a different set of fundamental out-rock influences… a better pop sensibility, and kinda (musically rather than songwriter-wise) carrying the sardonic weirdo torch of Beefheart, Sun City Girls, etc, in SY’s post-Geffen wake?

(haven’t stepped away to really think that description over)

Ever listen to Black Taj? Even more classic rock.
