hello, welcome to the community.drownedinsound.com rap listening club. starting next week, we’re going to listen to an album or mixtape selected by one of our number (every wednesday). if you’d like to pick an album, please click here:

i’ll DM you with the instructions a few days before your turn. however, please note that i’ll only call on you for a pick if you’re active in the thread a bit. (don’t take that too seriously, you don’t have to post a ton but a bit of engagement is necessary or the thread’ll die on its arse)
we’ll probably do some polls and stuff as we go. people like polls.
the only restrictions in terms of what you can pick are:
- has to have rapping on it (so no instrumental hip-hop) and has to be from the US. could maybe revisit the second point down the line if there’s demand but for now, we’re sticking with uncle sam (yes yes you can choose slick rick, smartarse)
- has to be available to listen to - realistically, people aren’t going to sign up to a new streaming service or pay for a download to hear your pick. so if you really want to select something that isn’t on spotify, you’ll need to provide a dropbox link or something
- this is actually version 4.0 of the listening club (shoutout to shippers) so probs best to try and avoid any of the albums we’ve had before (i’ll put the list in a separate post)
other than that, it can be any rap album / mixtape you like: a brand new release or an old favourite, an obscure underground artifact or a fully canonized classic.
some other key points:
- you don’t need to be a hardcore hip-hop head to take part, newcomers and casual listeners are equally welcome
- if you want to join in but don’t want to choose an album, that’s absolutely fine. the more discussion the better
- don’t worry about ‘falling behind’, you’re welcome to post about any of the albums at any time. if you’ve got some thoughts about a record from a few weeks ago, by all means share them
- if you don’t like an album then feel free to say so
- please don’t be offended if someone doesn’t like your pick, it’s not personal
