Basing mine on how many albums have I streamed in full multiple times, and rate 7/10 or above. Looks like I’m more aligned now than I used to be, but the difference may just be that the last few years I’ve heard basically everything in these lists whereas before 2018 I was a much more casual listener.
ownership is a bit blurry on some, particularly older ones, as some albums were bought by a sibling or flatmate and then shared/ripped - i’ll stick to the ones i bought, unless it’s one i probably would have bought anyway
a lot more from the early years. and a lot of those i’ve bought in charity shops quite recently so maybe the late 00s is where i belong
in the later years there are several albums i enjoy but haven’t loved enough to buy, when those start turning up in more charity shops those numbers might bump up a bit more
It got less aligned with critical opinion after the new boards happened apparently (5+ every year except 2008 and 2014, then under 5 every year. although I might get Punisher for Christmas this year, which would put me on 5 for 2020- including all of the top four)
Most is 9 in 2010. A few #1s owned (Kanye X2, Fiona Apple). 808s being so low surprised me.
These lists have massively fucked with my perception of when albums were released.
Dwindling numbers of albums owned in recent years, maybe due to more streaming but also year end lists being less indie rock centric and no longer aligned to my tastes
So last year, I hit my peak cool with a whopping 12 out of 50. I am back down to 7 this year and I doubt that will change between now and the end of the year.
So basically, i’m not really aligned at all. And I am completely fine with that because I already know I have the best taste out of everyone on the planet.
Done by what I own on vinyl (has caused me to add a bit to the old Discogs want list this) also a reminder nostalgia, Ultra & Channel Orange never got vinyl releases.
Started going through 2007 and realised it was just going to be lists of 50 popular albums, some of which i like a lot, but that I’ve heard lots about over the years. I’m not really sure what credentials the critics have. The lists are fine and tend to get the big artists right.
It’s for similar reasons, I prefer the median vote score of the DiS rankings.
I realise this doesn’t answer the thread, but just me excusing myself for not going through 14 lists and counting up. I’d started a spreadsheet and everything!
List reflects albums I own, but not necessarily ones I love or even like. Seems I’m pretty good at getting the most critically acclaimed album of the year; can’t say I agree with the winner more than once or twice, but there we are.
Less and less as the years go on it seems. In 2021 for example, Dry Cleaning, Wolf Alice, and Squid are the only three albums from that top 20 I would listen to cos they’re the only guitar rock on the top 20 of that list (I guess there’s stuff like Turnstile technically but a bit too hardcore, not quite indie rock/alt).
In 2008 no number one record was owned
In 2009 no number one record was owned
In 2010 no number one record was owned
In 2011 a number one record was owned
In 2012 no number one record was owned
In 201-
Not sure how good a test this is of how ‘aligned’ you are with critical consensus. Over the years I have often bought records because lots of people say they are good. I then listen to them and make my own mind up and I often disagree. As a result I’d own a lot of the records on those lists but I’d rarely if ever agree with how they are ranked.
