Their 1st album is great but canāt justify more than a 3 for Elastica given how little music they released.
The debut is a lot better/has aged better than most ābrit popā albums. Mostly because itās a proper post-punk record rather than a soggy meat and potatoes indie album. They fall in a weird place where they made a good record, and weāre briefly bigger than youād imagine from that, but also were not quite good enough to land on any music nerd best of lists now nor truly have any songs that have really had much staying power in the public consciousness. 3.5/5, rounded down to a 3.
Well at least they ripped off bad songs and made them better

Feel like theyāre going to get a ridiculously inflated score. One decent album and already myriad 5s, where other acts with handfuls of genuinely classic albums seem to get hit with 3s because they released a few dodgy albums 20 years into their careers. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE ![]()
PS Frischmann is cool and āStutterā is immense (even if itās a total rip-off like all of their songs).
Lots of negative comments too though. Donāt think theyāll score very highly tbh.
Elastica didnāt do that though.
A 1 for helping to invent Britpop and for ripping off the Enemy
Elastica were basically the Joy Division of the 90s.
Thatās their point
But thatās why people score those other artists lower though. In someoneās opinion Elastica have one 5/5 album, they get a 5. Someone else has two 5/5 albums and letās say 3 2/5 albums, theyāre possibly going to get a lower score. Itās comparing two different things.
Even down to the love of nationalism!
Were Elastica Tories too?
Makes sense to me to 5 someone you love even if they released little, if say Life Without Buildings had a HGATR, yeah it seems unlikely, Iād 5 the hell out of them and discographies donāt get skimpier. I just donāt think Elastica were that good.
I looked to see what Donna Matthews was up to, sheās uploading some music to YouTube and she seems in a good place, glad to see that.
Was coming in to say āover 50 responses already for the Ready To Go lot??ā when I realised that was Republica.
I donāt know who this lot are, so will keep schtum for once.
A 5 from me, based on their debut album. It came out when I was 13, remains one of my favourite debuts of all time and still gets spun regularly.
Strangely, Justin Welch, the drummer, bought my drum kit off me last year for spares. We chatted for twenty minutes and he was lovely.
Thereās plenty of blame to go around for that one, but Iām still inclined to heap it all on Alex James.
Fucking hell. Dark days.
Pretentious song thieves but jolly good ones
4/5
tbf I would definitely (maybe did) give Oasis 4/5, and possibly even a 5, so
