Butterfly is a good album. The latest album was good. All I want for christmas is you is a classic. Hard to say but as I find a large portion of it unbearable I’m going to say 2
If she reigned in her voice a bit more often she’d probably be much better.
I bloody love Mariah.
Don’t think I’ve ever properly listened to a full album but she has some absolute bangers.
Always Be My Baby was my most scrobbled song on Last.fm.
Hard to care either way on this one. A few great pop songs, one of the all-time classic christmas songs, and a lot of rubbish.
Her voice is astounding but I’m really not a fan of technical displays of virtuosity for the sake of them.
That whole style of singing where it’s about demonstrating the singer’s range and runs is the equivalent of someone doing a 5 minute guitar solo across the whole song and it does my head in. Just sing the fucking melody!
Yeah I’ll go to bat for her, went on a big Mariah binge last year. Think the really early pop stuff has aged badly and I’m not that keen on her basic ballads generally but her more R&B sounding stuff (I.e. when she had more influence in the studio) is consistently really good.
Butterfly’s one of the best slow R&B records of the 90s and Breakdown is one of the best songs ever written
Daydream’s also really good. Last couple of records are really solid too. Bloody love the Miguel duet on …Elusive Chanteuse
Was thinking the other day about how fucked up her situation with Tommy Motola (?) was. I feel like she’s OK to have her diva antics having gone through that
