Always thought they were quite fun and one of the better of those naughts indie bands. Good few tunes that i’d probably still enjoy. Obviously haven’t listened in years and I doubt anything beyond the second album exists.

Always hated his stupid hats though.

Should be a 3 but they can have a 4 for nostalgia .

Oooh, this is a nice surprise!

Love them. Bought everything they have released.

I’d imagine that most folks won’t have listened to anything past the first couple of albums so my recommendation back into them would be The National Health album.

Always good fun live, Paul Smith is a great, entertaining front man and they hate the Tories.

And then I’ll tell you some more about

Oh
and they are playing a greatest hits tour later this year for all the nostalgia people

What’s with the hat, exactly?

First two albums are bangers, 100%. The other four might be as well, idk, need to investigate them at some point, I just started listening to less indie around the turn of the decade.

Paul Smith’s a really good interviewee. Heard him on podcasts talking about music or football and he’s really lucid and smart and dry-humoured. Could listen to him all day. Great voice.

A 4 for me.

Another 2000s band I’ve never heard. In a spirit of optimism I’m going to assume they’re great.

I used to like his ‘Dear Listener’ show on Star & Shadow Radio, too.

I’m not sure if it’s possible to find those anywhere anymore, though.

Thought Parisian Skies was a single, good tune

Will always have a special place in my heart for two reasons:

  1. When I started trying to write about music for my student paper, the drummer from MP was the first person I ever got assigned to interview. It was probably an average Tuesday afternoon to him but it felt like a big deal to me. He was a pretty good chat and tolerated my stupid questions very well.

  2. I remember putting The Coast is Always Changing on a painfully cringe mix CD for a girl I liked from London (“because London’s so far away when you’re there”) so I should give them credit for that awful memory.

Saw them at the Head of Steam in Newcastle in 2004 or something at one of their earliest gigs, it was obvious they were going to be massive, then they were, for a bit. They only really had one trick and I got bored of it quite quickly. Second album was such a let down after Our Velocity as the first single. Ah well. They can have a 3.

Getting into the first album on my first mp3 player is a strong memory. Had fully expected to have them be bog standard indie but they’re a lot better than that. Their first album is wall to wall bangers.

Second album is alright and our velocity is an all time great song.

Bought a fair few albums of theirs after that and apart from the odd song none of them have grabbed me.

Peaked on their debut basically but still a strong 4/5.

Loved the first album, didn’t get on with the second other than My Velocity. Haven’t followed them closely since then but everything I’ve heard has been way better than expected. 4 for the memories cos god I loved that first album

Books from boxes gets them a 3 alone, rest of it is bog standard indie.

Always thought it was really odd that they were signed to Warp.
