The singles off of Republic are all excellent I think, but the album as a whole is patchy and I hate Stephen Street’s wimpy production.

Stephen Hague i think! Although, Stephen Street does also provide wimpy productions haha. Agree about the album, however, ‘Regret’ is one of their top 5 singles.

Am just in the process of getting into them, having always stuck with the singles before. Feel like they’re going to land on the second tier for me - lots I like, some I love, but no album has really hit home fully for me yet.

If Blue Monday comes on when I am drunk enough it will usually end with me attempting to dance on a table / bar. Not even sure why - think I did it once when I was 18 and it sort of became a drunken night out trope. I’m 37 now so those are considerably less frequent.

I don’t think they ever made a classic album, although, ‘Technique’ comes close.

They’re decent, but I don’t love them. No doubting they were incredibly influential and innovative, maybe it’s just that so much had passed by the time I came to them that it didn’t sound all that.

The new BBC podcast/series on them and Joy Division is really good though. Nothing new, but very well put together and Maxine Peake narrating.

I never really understood why they used him when they’d produced Technique themselves and it sounded great.

Movement’s great, but definitely a process of transition from Joy Division. Then they released Everything’s Gone Green and it just feels like the start of the band proper, taking the past and razing it to the ground. Then Temptation, which, if pushed, is probably my favourite ever song. Amazing really to be able to do that after the turmoil and grief of Ian’s death.

Then capped it all with Power, Corruption and Lies. It’s an extraordinary period of development that carries on all the way to Technique. It’s unique I think in that whilst each step was a logical development from what had gone before rather than a complete re-invention the overall change is so absolutely profound, also in the fact that almost all of the music along the way was brilliant considered on its own terms.

Coming to NO first with Substance and Technique I never quite had my head round where the singles fitted in with the development of their sound until I got the 1981/82 e.p. and then suddenly that transition from Movement to PC&L made sense.

This track is amazing, never included on any albums but it’s sort of a cross between post-punk, reggae and sort of vgm console music i guess (in other words, years ahead of its time)

This (very early) live set is on youtube in full I think and worth watching in full, but the version of Chosen Time is particularly thrilling. Love how edgy the band seemed at this time, always on the verge of collapse, always ‘on something’ no doubt even if it was just Pernod

Another one where they’re on top-drawer form, this version of Perfect Kiss is superb:

This version of This Time of Night from ‘Pumped Full of Drugs’ is slick as hell, I’m not a massive fan of what they went for on Low-Life but this is ‘it’ done to perfection.

Also Peter Hook is a tool and Gillian Gilbert is a legend.

Worth a 5 alone for their early stuff. Power, Corruption and Lies is one of the best albums EVER made. I would say albums wise they have been patchy since then but there is no doubting their singles have been phenomenal. Hooky is a prize knob but he comes across well in interview and I enjoy hearing him speak. He’s also a phenomenal bass player. Stephen Morris seems like a really good Egg and is clearly a great drummer. I respect the band for performing Blue Monday live on TOTP when nobody else did live performances on the show.
