I like them a lot. I remember a time in the mid 2000s when it seemed like they were playing at every festival I went to and possibly ODād so probably overdue a listen.
1000 Hurts is one of those rare albums that I bought because I was in a record store and they were playing the album - I asked what it was and was just like 'take my money". Canāt remember which shop it was apart from that it was on Camden high street. Also canāt remember why I was in Camden in January 2001 unless it was because I was hanging around before the ridiculously fun ā¦Trail of Dead show at the Astoria that month.
Prayer to God was a song I used to put on mixtapes a lot, and almost always got the response that it was peopleās favourite song on said mixtapes
The Wikipedia page for 1000 Hurts says that the voice at the beginning of the album (āShellac of North America⦠etcā) is Philip Baker Hall. Is that right? I did a bit of casual googling earlier but couldnāt find any corroborating it.
I went to the Shellac ATP where they played first on each day. Great stuff. That was the year that Cheap Trick headlined on the Sunday, which was a lot of fun.
I had a red Shellac t shirt that I used to wear when me and my friend dressed up as the White Stripes for fancy dress parties.
One of those bands where the highest moments are very high, and the lowest moments arenāt too bad either.
4
It does sound a bit like him now that you mention it but Iāve always assumed it was a computerised voice.
I think a 4 on balance, some definite troughs in with the peaks. But some pretty tall peaks. Seems a good lad too.
Steve Albiniās attempt at being the Jesus Lizard but not nearly as good, 2/5.
My favorite band shirt is a black shellac shirt which just says shellac with the logo black writing on black shirt. Nice as itās a band shirt without obviously being a band shirt. Also a favorite ,as the show I saw them , they just did there own merch on (very small) stage at the end. So I literally just handed Steve 20 bucks and he passed me shirt. I then asked him something but canāt remember what.
Yeah that shirt is a classic because the idea is that as it fades in the wash/sun you see the text clearer and clearer, right?
Great live band: they always bring a bit of humour to proceedings. Todd Trainer is an amazing drummer:
Seen them live a couple of times and really enjoyed them but never have much desire to put an album on.
A generous four.
Yeah, if I could only keep one Steve Albini track it would have to be this one.
I really love that Peel session of End of Radio. (Thanks @Icarus-Smicarus for posting it).
My mate Jack always wears his Shellac t-shirt on the last day of any festival we go to, so: 5/5.
And there were 5s!
Real 5s!
And there were thousands of them!
This is no kind of metaphor!
Bloody love Shellac. Love how guitar/bass/drums is stripped right back to the essentials and they interlock with each so damn well.
I had no idea what Action Park referred to until I saw this documentary a couple of weeks ago!
This came up recently but it turns out itās a coincidence and they just thought it was a good name, I think.
Ah here we are, from the Talk page of the Albumās Wikipedia entry
I edited that entry, as I am in the band and was there when we came up with the title for the album. None of us had ever heard of the New Jersey Action Park. We were just brainstorming / coming up with names. Todd came up with āat Action Parkā. I came up with āUranusā. Steve came up with āThe Rude Gestureā. We were just throwing ideas out at each other trying to crack each other up. My brotherās girlfriend at the time was good at illustrations. We came up with a list of things that we imagined would be in this āAction Parkā and asked her to illustrate it. Please remove the ācitation neededā. I am the citation. Love how alice in chains make an appearance
āI am the citationā
Interesting, thanks. It works pretty well anyway, imagining them playing to a bunch of kids throwing themselves down life threatening theme park rides!
Talk pages are great for this kind of thing on Wikipedia
Score in a bit
As everyone says, an amazing live band but the albums can be a bit hit and miss.
Was in a terrible mood earlier and a beer and At Action Park in the sun have hit the spot nicely.
The most indie thing I think I ever saw was Fuck Buttons playing A prayer to God during a DJ set at ATP and everyone in the room sang along as if their lives depended on it.
