šŸŽµ How Good Are They Really šŸŽµ The Clash

Only really know London Calling but it’s absolutely superb from beginning to end. Lost in the Supermarket is pretty much the best song ever written, don’t think anything has ever come as close to expressing how consumer culture makes me feel.

Feel like I probably need to reappraise them/5

(abstaining)

helps with that one that the guy singing it isn’t very confident and doesn’t have a strong singing voice, adds to the theme

always forget how good Give Em Enough Rope is. Same energy as the s/t but darker and more muscular sound. Bet that stuff sounded great live. And then Stay Free is such a lovely nostalgia ballad from Mick Jones.

someone pointed out before that Supermarket-Clampdown-Brixton is possibly the greatest run of tracks featuring three different lead vocalists

Clash related. Really like this track

Massive Attack probably have a decent shout on this e.g. Angel > Risingson > Teardrops

(though I’m not sure if guest vocalists count)

Heh heh, The Clash are going to end up underneath The Supremes, aren’t they?

I’ve thought for a long time that punk is the wrong tag for them. Only the early stuff could be described as punk really. They’re mostly a rock band that’s very aware of what’s coming overground.

I might love some albums more for personal reasons but if I had to choose an album that was somehow ā€œobjectivelyā€ the best, then London Calling would be right at the front of the pack for me. The range of ideas, styles, topics, the passion and energy, the depth of the production and still to be packed with so many catchy as hell tunes and only one dud (Lover’s Rock) - pretty amazing achievement.

There are some genuinely great songs on that album. I’ve got a real soft spot for this one:

Guns Of Brixton should be the national anthem.

if we’re doing mescaleros…

all three of their albums are good to great. Global A-Go-Go best front to back for me

Also Straight to Hell > Paper Planes must be one of the all-time combos of brilliant original song and then equally great use of a sample

Yeah calling any of The Clash’s output post debut Punk Rock is silly. Might explain why so many people seem to be surprised/disappointed by what they end up hearing. They are just what would go on to be known as ā€˜Indie Rock’ in the UK during the 00s, listening to London Calling and its amazing how contemporary a lot of it sounds still, hell it sounds a lot fresher than most ā€˜indie rock’ we get these days

Incidentally, it must have been round about the time of this gig that I first signed up on DiS. I was living in the Scottish Borders at the time, so…

London Calling as a song somehow never loses an inch of its power, feels as righteous and angry as the first time I heard it - almost brings me to tears sometimes (Born in the USA does that too but I’m sure plenty of people are very bored by that one)

He said go out and get me my old movie stills!
Go out and get me another roll of pills!
There I go shaking, but I ain’t got the chills!
