London calling sounds like a punk rock record to me, itâs simple, catchy, the songs are short, the guy canât sing very well, whatâs the other criteria for punk? I think it can still be punk because sometimes it has a trumpet
No real opinions on the Clash, heard a couple of albums, not great/ not bad. Definition of a 3/5.
Itâs too varied in style to be a straight up punk record though, and too long.
3/5. Some songs I really like a lot (Spanish Bombs, Lost in the Supermarket, Police on My Back) but musically I think there are records that blow my mind a lot more from the late 70s/early 80s than anything theyâve done (Metal Box, first three Wire records, first Magazine record, first Devo album, all of the Birthday Partyâs output and thatâs just off the top of my head). Appreciate theyâre a mega influence on many bands I like but I dunno what it is, theyâve just never clicked with me as much as Iâve tried.
Would have loved to have seen em live though, I know a fair few people who saw them back in the day and they describe the gigs as life changing so they couldnât have been that bad
Also Paul Simonon is maybe the coolest guy to ever to play in a band. He is the cool moody guy rock n roll archetype for me. Fantastic player too, can assert himself and his personality in a song without going all Flea or Peter Hook on it, heâd be the bass player in my dream band for sure.
But if Primus are 5/5 then Faith No More must be 7/5?
Early Pixies lyrics needed revising
Ha ha!!!
I have a bootleg cd of the ârat patrolâ version of combat rock which is well worth checking out. There is also a 4 disc live set of radio broadcasts which has 4 shows from across there career. Earlier shows have ropy sound quality but the ones from Sandinista and combat rock tours are great.
Think this is the longest post of my erratic DIS careerâŠ
Iâve not yet been to this myself, but it looks great (and itâs free)
4/5. My da really loves them and itâs rubbed off on me. Joeâs pronunciation of Spanish is really funny.
nice one, going to be in London tomorrow, this could be a fun way to kill some time
Terrific band. Came to them quite late but picked up one of their compilation albums on a whim and it immediately grabbed me. Great singles and great deep cuts on all their albums.

Still feel like will smith should be about 30
Theyâre alright but not really arsed. 3/5.
Really surprised about how many people are not arsed about them. A decent punk band who became a brilliant rock band and then did really interesting things with their platform. Massive gateway band into many, many things for me, primarily reggae.
Also: Lost In The Supermarket, White Man In Hammersmith Palais, Train In Vain, Straight To Hell, London Calling, Rudie Canât Fail, Guns of Brixton, The Magnificent Seven are all incredible songs, and Armagideon Time has a shout for being my fave cover ever.
Was put off the later stuff for years by Rock the Bloody Casbah & Should I Stay, but they made some really interesting stuff later on too.
5/5 for me.
Went to this a couple of months back, interesting but pretty short. Worth checking out but wouldnât fill much more than an hour.
Fuck. May have to dock them a point for this
Iâm another one who bought London Calling, probably in Fopp for like ÂŁ3, on the premise it would change my life, listened to it and was like âwell yeah, itâs quite good I guessâ. No real affection for them but accept theyâre good and they had some decent songs. 3/5
