šŸ’æ How Good Is It Really šŸ’æ Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)

Easiest 10 I can think of for me. Don’t have anything to say that others haven’t already said better, but seeing this thread and putting the album on improved my day greatly.

I think I’ve gone the other way – been listening to the uncensored version a lot more recently. Such an amazing song though. Those subtle strings that come in are just sublime. GZA’s verse too. Always loved this part:

First of all, who’s your A&R?
A mountain climber who plays an electric guitar?
But he don’t know the meaning of dope
When he’s looking for a suit-and-tie-rap
That’s cleaner than a bar of soap

10 without question.

Obviously a huge and lasting impact on the genre, and all my friends growing up.

Not a single bad track, so much energy and power, massive depth to the lyrics that still unravel all this time later.

My best man gave me a framed LP on my wedding day, which hangs proudly on my wall.

Easy 10, only came to it for the first time a few years ago and even then it sounded fucking incredible

Came here to write this exact post.

Illmatic has been covered already?

Unless there are a lot of silent 1’s, this one could get quite a high result.

Yeah, I think that’s part of the reason I find Supreme Clientele so addictive. I think it took me a while to get into too, but it’s one of those albums I can still to multiple times back to back and never get bored of. Just seems like he’s operating on a different plane to anyone else and as a result feels as fresh now as it did then/would still be a standout example of abstract hip hop if released today.

As often as my favourite Wu album changes, this is the one that’ll never leave the top 3. I can’t remember hovering over a track poll for so long, and I was never going to be fully satisfied with my choice. Every track is earth shatteringly good, an atomic bomb on the genre that still resonates today. Think the rawness and energy of it is such that, despite it being somewhat ā€œdatedā€ in terms of sound, if something like it was released now, it’d slam a reset button on the genre. Still freaks my nut out to this day that you got several of the greatest rappers and once of the best producers ever, arriving fully formed, with completely distinct voices on a debut album, without a single misstep. We’ve never seen anything else quite like it. One for the ages, 10/10.

Genuinely can’t pick a single favourite track. Every time I listen, I think ā€œyeah, this is my favourite track off the albumā€ and then the next track starts and I think exactly the same thing. It’s too damn hard!

I listened to this for the first time yesterday and I just really, really don’t get it at all. But then I am definitely not a fan of hiphop. I managed to find some fun in the De la Soul album, and maybe could appreciate it even if it wasn’t my thing, for this I just feel perplexed. I guess the other album was quite pop, and this definitely isn’t.

I feel I’m just opening myself up to ridicule for saying that.

I do feel like I’m supposed to abstain because I don’t get it, but I’d rather listen to the Weezer album again and I was happy to give that a good kicking. I’m guessing that hiphop fans are probably quite happy to dish out a shit score for Interpol even though it might not be their genre of choice.

I like to try to stay open-minded as best I can, and millions of hiphop fans can’t all be wrong, so I’ll try to give it a 2nd go this week and see if I can find something that I’m currently missing. I’d like to have a sudden epiphany but am not optimistic.

It’s definitely a grower. I didn’t get it at all the first few times I listened to it. Its sonically quite subtle and the hooks take a while to reveal themselves

Went with C.R.E.A.M. in the end.

Very surprised that Method Man has no votes at all.

Indeed although it seems in fact @riverwise’s comments were not that similar

The opening to method man is the reason I went 9 rather than 10. Love this record to pieces but I find that bit so hard to listen to.

Last August, wasn’t it? Think I was on holiday so probably rushed it. To be fair, it is very good indeed
