Probably his best film since the Return I reckon

Was also expecting a kind of esoteric and slow burning couple of hours but it was actually really compelling

I think the worst thing about the parents was the complacency, made it seem much worse

Brilliantly trolled by Netflix only having the first one on there.

It’s for the best tbf.

Reviews tell me the 3rd one is the best of the bunch, was willing to suffer the 6 hours of the first two for this but it turns out I’ve currently suffered 3 hours for nothing

Those reviews are wrong. The 3rd one is awful! Second is OK for the Smaug bits.

looks kinda good although I’m not a massive fan of Kurosawa or Ozu

hopefully there’ll be a few more obscurities…

This was the first of his I’ve seen. Isn’t Leviathan supposed to be pretty good too?

I mean all of his films are pretty good but I’d go for The Return next, and then Leviathan personally

I’d say the Return is purely more ā€œenjoyableā€, all of them are quite bleak though

The Return is a masterpiece.

Michelle Williams’ performance in Blue Valentine is incredible. Don’t think the film realises how completely unsympathetic Gosling’s character is in the flashback bits though

Southland Tales managed to be even worse than the reports I’ve been hearing about it for 10+ years.

Not gonna get the 6 part comic books that act as prequels?

Watched Clash (2016). On All4, never heard of it before. Thought it was properly good. The whole film takes place in the back of a police wagon during Egyptian protests between military and Muslim Brotherhood supporters. The director does such a good job at raising the claustrophobia and tension, as well as actually managing to film it all. Definitely worth a watch.

Also watched the Butterfly Effect as I’d never seen it before. Expected to hate it, thought it was surprisingly alright.Ashton Kutcher is decent which i mever thought would happen

Thought The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão was very good

Mary and the Witch’s Flower was super charming and Kate Winslet was quite menacing as Madam Mumblechook but all in all, it just felt a bit Kiki / Spirited / Howl’s lite.

woah, why not?

agree with that - there’s a fair few Ozus and Kurosawas on there anyway, as far as I remember

Definitely preferred Mary to Howl personally
