A lot of songs have lyrics which are snapshots about moments and moods, but not actually stories, in the sense that they donā€™t develop a narrative as the songs go on. Think about The Tourist by Radiohead, whose lyrics capture a moment and a feeling, but donā€™t actually have any story development.

It is a bit of a tricky area though, and the argument ā€œI know a story when I hear itā€ might not cut itā€¦

My approach:

  • A story in this round means the narration of a sequence of events.
  • An instrumental is therefore not a story.
  • It does not need to have clear three part structure, as long as the narrator is informing us that something happened and then something else happened.
  • The entire songā€™s lyrics need not be a story as long as there is a clear story told within the song.
  • Multiple unrelated vignettes are ok as long as at least one of them contains a sequence of events that constitutes a story by itself.
  • Donā€™t mind plugging foreign lyrics into google translate if thereā€™s a non-English song telling a story but then your fate is in the hands of the translation

I have found this the hardest round to come up with ideas for as I donā€™t tend to listen to or learn the lyrics to a lot of music and a lot of my listening would be instrumental jazz/dance/ambient - but Iā€™ve just added to my tiny shortlist (of pretty obvious picks) with a song that I forgot about which is an all-timer for me, very pleased I didnā€™t play this in an earlier round! Going to need to synchronise my watch for Thursday.

got two songs from the same album in mind with very different tones. leaning towards one but someone else might take the other. maybe iā€™ll just ignore both and go for my second choice.

My pick is going to be from one of my very favourite bands, but they are, ahem, an acquired taste, so this is one where Iā€™ll be happy if it clicks with only a few people but those people really like it. Nul points incomingā€¦
