Musicians who used to make a totally different genre

I ended up bringing up one of The Bravery being in a ska band on this week’s podcast and it sparked this little response from Giles who hosts 101 part time jobs

Got me wondering, which musicians used to make totally different music or had a massive career pivot like Bryan Ferry’s jump to jazz.

I think both Julia-Sophie and Art School Girlfriend were both in emo-ish bands

Clint Mansell’s pivot from being frontman of grebo stalwarts PWEI, to doing big emotive film scores.

That’s a big one that I was trying to think of

M83 used to be in a metal band (we geeked out about Deftones when I interviewed him) (Chino is also a big m83 fan which you can kinda hear with Crosses)

Justin Broadrick has done a lot - ambient, grind, D’n’B…

Skrillex is not one I’m proud of here but is valid…

Talk Talk going pop to post rock was pretty huge.

Shining (Norway) going from pretty good scandijazz through a couple glorious hybrid albums and then settling on way less glorious metal stuff.

Hayeminol, who I just discovered with their album this week, also Norwegian, starting punk/garage and now being super lush psychedelic with gorgeous harmonies.

Manitoba/Caribou turning way more club-coded electronic starting with Swim.

Yeah, was going to mention Weyes Blood (need to listen to her early noise stuff)

Goo Goo Dolls went from very good, Replacements-esque college rock to the syrupy balladeers we mostly know them for.

And I didn’t bring this up on the pod?!? I think DiS might even have promoted one of their shows

I remember reading Eliza Doolittle makes very different music now but I can’t remember what it is.

Think Soul Asylum did similar.

Sam Prekop (from The Sea & Cake) working solo went from making his usual sounding indie rock to suddenly switching to instrumental modular synth stuff.
