Yeah, excellent. Really liked the new stuff.
What a great band
Somewhere in a secret underground laboratory, scientists are working round the clock to splice the dna of Buck Meek and Mike Mills and thus create the ultimate indie rock supporting player.
ā¦and Drake-feuding rapper.
Really enjoyed last night, I can see why theyāre so hyped.
Butā¦
I really donāt get what the fuck Buck Meek does a lot of the time. Like when he locks in with the band and plays the big riffs itās great, but a lot of the time heās just hovering around the top of the fretboard making some noises and it really doesnāt work for me. It sounds like heās not bothered to practice with the band and is winging it, finding something that is only sometimes in the key of the song.
I dunno. Still a 7 maybe 8/10 gig for me. Wanted Jenni but I see theyāve not been playing it on the tour so fair play, got plenty other good stuff. Loved when it got all quiet. Adrianne really is something else.
Never seen a guitarist spend so much time at the dusty end of the fretboard and I absolutely love it, he adds so much texture and chime and layers. Also the way he moves must mean that heās constantly adding vibrato to all his notes, and AL seems to have some tremolo on her guitar almost every song. Those two things together are a big part of their live sound imho, gives the notes and chords a real sense of movement and ebbb and flow.
Donāt really have an opinion one way or the other on his guitar playing buuuuut he has quite a distinct singing style and I do think theyād be at least 15-20% less good without his harmonies.
twang 4 dayz
The solo track he played on their last tour was really lovely. Proper texan drawl voice.
I just checked the setlist for the two gigs Iād been to before this - apparently they played Those Girls, The Toy, Shoulders and Not in 2018 on the Capacity tour?? They must have such a backlog of songs, that they can just release whenever they feel like - wouldnāt be surprised if the next single is something she wrote when she was 17.
Ridiculous that a band who released their debut album less than 4 years ago can leave so much good stuff out of a 90 minute set every night innit
From what I can see it looks like theyāve only played Interstate live three times, and thatās one of my top 10 of theirs no doubt!
I think its refreshing for a guitarist to be so restrained. It suits Adrianneās way of playing (and performing).
I was completely the opposite - there was a three song spell in the middle that tbh honest, bored me a bit. Much preferred it when she used the full power of her vocals.
Meekās quite obviously pretty pretentious and thatās a really good thing sometimes tbh
Restrained is one thing, just noodling about the way he does⦠seems ok on record but didnāt work at all for me last night. Realise Iām likely in the minority.
Like heās trying to play a āfeelingā and not a melody or riff a lot of the time.
Was stood right in front of him last night and thought he brought a lot. Really added to the atmosphere in the quieter sections and his voice is lovely. Wouldnāt be the same without him.
Similarly, Bill Callahan had a chair-sitting guitarist who played āemotionsā or whatever last time I saw him and it was nice but⦠I wouldnāt have minded if he wasnāt there
I liked that but yeah, they made some very choice setlist decisions - their big 3 songs in the first third of the gig, a middle section with two solo acoustic ones followed by two new ones, looking like they were going to end on a new song too ⦠I like the confidence to do what they wanted but it was unusual to say the least.
Did you like it then, given you donāt know them at all?
Yes I liked them a lot and will check out their albums. I think in general I like my music a bit more structured and to the point so there was a couple of spells where my interest dipped but otherwise it was a ![]()
Does anyone want a little Fruitmarket fact?
