Well the only thing on my radar is this…
…anyone??
Was just about to get around to thinking about starting the thread myself, cos there’s a few good ones this week, I reckon.
Hamish Hawk - A Firmer Hand
Scottish singer-songwriter with his third album full of memorable turns of phrase and his quite 80s synthpop stylings. His last album was great - the pre-release tracks from this one suggest this one could be even better. The Quietus have it as album of the week.
Pom Poko - Champion
Norwegian indie pop band’s third album
Laura Cannell - The Rituals of Hildegard Reimagined
Prolific composer with an album reimagining work by 12th Century Polymath Hildegard von Bingen alongside Cannell’s own compositions. “The 12 track album is performed on bass recorders, a 12 string knee harp, delay pedal and sparse layering, conjuring a bridge to connect the centuries. The Rituals of Hildegard Reimagined was improvised and recorded in single takes”.
Hifi Sean & David McAlmont - DAYLIGHT
Synth pop, soul, electro and general summery good times on this second collaborative album for Hifi Sean (aka Sean Dickson of the Soup Dragons) and angelic voiced David McAlmont.
There will be a companion album to this - TWILIGHT - released early next year.
Les Rallizes Dénudés - 屋根裏 YaneUra Oct. '80
Latest official release of live albums by the underground Kyoto psych rock band, this one from a 1980 show at Yaneura in Shibuya, Tokyo in the brief era guitarist Fujio Yamaguchi was in the band.
Dead Pioneers - Dead Pioneers
Political spoken work and hardcore punk from Denver, particularly focused on the experience of singer Greg Deal as a member of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. This originally came out last year but has now got a wider release on Hassle Records. It’s great.
Lesibu Grand - Triggered
Indie rock from Atlanta. “The band takes its influences from the NYC new wave scene, particularly Blondie, The B-52s and The Go Gos”.
Wishy – Triple Seven
Dream pop-adjacent fuzzy alt-rock from Indianapolis.
We Are Scorpio - We Are Scorpio
Debut by Detroit duo, the poet Jessica Care Moore and rock musician Steffanie Christi’an, along with guests including LL Cool J.
Chuck Johnson - Sun Glories
Minimalist/ambient. “Oakland-based musician, composer, and producer Chuck Johnson explores themes of time, memory, and illusion through his unique blend of pedal steel, synths, organs, strings, and drums.”
Only thing on my radar is the new one from Horse Jumper of Love. Usually sort of fuzzy alt-rock.
Horse Jumper of Love - Disaster Trick
Hamish Hawk - A Firmer Hand
Like a slightly less silly, slightly more straight forward Divine Comedy. He’s playing Nottingham Sunday so if I like it I might go
New Gel EP. Zeitgeisty but very good still hardcore.
Kagami - s/t
fast and furious 80s HC from Japan. lovely stuff
Henrik Meierkord - Falling
Cello centred ambience. Not fast or furious. ‘forlorn yet iridescent ambient soundscapes’
, “We are all falling, sometimes we are not aware of it and sometimes we just fall into the warm deep sea and we like it. I make music especially when I have anxiety or feel bad or even when the weather is bad. Creativity works as medicine for my brain and soul; I grow calm. For me, the warm sea is like a harmonic creative ocean where I accept the light insanity — or let’s say: the creative ‘insanity’ — that takes over. I fall into the musical ocean, and I can’t control what appears. I play and create what comes to mind within the flow. It’s a range between light and darkness where sorrow is sometimes simultaneous with creativity. To create, one sometimes needs to go inside your inner darkness and embrace it. I think the ocean could be about acceptance: that all people let their control go and just fall."
Sea + I - drone for a flower i knew
in their words - subterranean 4/4 beat x guitar drone tones. lovely.
This is the only record I will listen to today.
This is fun. 80s sounding party poppy punk from France. Infectious
New Starts - More Break-up Songs
New band ft. Darren Hayman
Dog Eyes - Holy Friend
Lo-fi sparkley bedroom pop duo. Just under 27 minutes long and so I’ve listened to it twice this morning. Surprisingly lovely.
Black Sea Dahu - Live In Zurich and Bern
Live albums aren’t generally too much of a hit, but I really like these guys and it sounds nice from my first dip into it. Comparisons to Big Thief, Bon Iver, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead.
Telenova - Time Is A Flower
Catchy australian indie pop debut album.
Koreless - Deceltica
New EP from the Welsh whizz-kid and FKA Twigs producer. Techno, two-step.
I am an absolute sucker for cello centred ambience so will be on that like a car bonnet. Sea + I on first listen sounds lovely (very muted Gassy beats) but only one track. Sniff…
yeah it really left me wanting more Hopefully something will follow!
Im so divided on the new Charly Bliss direction at first i really disliked it (didnt like the singles) but putting it on today i seem to like it a fair bit more. Might be because ive adjusted to the unexpected pivot to taylor swiftcore
It is EXTREMELY taylor swift though to the extent its all i think about which is probably not a great thing but theyve never exactly been original. Enjoyong it though and its better than torture poets. So probably a record for people looking for their taylor fix who didnt like tortured poets
Been vibing this today, extremely 80s coded dreamy, gothy synth pop. Love her reverb soaked vocals.
Leathers - Ultraviolet
Gave this/him a listen for the first time as there isn’t so much out today that caught my eye. Did enjoy it, though found it getting pretty samey 2/3 way though. See myself at least going back to some of the tracks though
Chuck Johnson is the main one for me…discography is well worth a rummage for warm and emotive ambient - early tracks suggest this should be another keeper
The Soundcarriers - Through Other Reflections
Loved Entropicalia, especially the Frodo Baggins tune, but that was over 10 years ago. Wilds from 2022 was decent, I guess.
This is summery, enchanting and a lot like the previous albums mentioned, although lower energy. Latin/British dreamy psych-folk? That’ll do it. Album art suggests Ghost Box but I don’t think they are on the label any more.
James Bernard - Only now
I have loved everything James Bernard has done so far so excited for this. Ambient bliss.
