New solo album from M John Henry called Strange Is The Way. You may be familiar with his work as lead singer with De Rosa, Scots contemporaries of Frabbits and Twilight Sad. Gentle and mournful as those associated Scottish bands with studio help from Robert Dallas Gray, guitarist with Life Without Buildings. My CD came a few weeks early from Bandcamp and this has rarely been off the player.
she was absolutely fantastic supporting Jason Isbell last year - played the songs beautifully and was very engaging and funny. If she was playing her own show up here I’d definitely go see her again.
Listening to this just now. Loved his first solo album. This one much more mellow and very good with it.
Young Fathers, SG Goodman, Sally Anne Morgan and Tropical Fuck Storm also on my list. Only other one not mentioned upthread is Siobhan Wilson - Summer EP:
Collaboration of industrial drone sounds and storytelling that “mixes fiction, spoken word poetry, theatrical antics, dense synthesis, acoustic ensemble and dark landscapes all set within the backdrop of a sinister Eastern Europe hotel. The resulting sound is menacing, humorous, harmonious, tumultuous, and at times quietly erotic.”
Might help if you understand Polish, but it looks like the booklet that comes with the physical product might have a translation.
I listened through a couple of times this morning while working and then again later on headphones while out running where I could zone out & focus on the lyrics for the first time. I know he’s obviously problematic these days, but they reminded me of Kozelek at his best painting these little stories of small town life. The lyrics to Snapping Turtle caught me in particular.
Thanks for the live rec @friendofthenight - I’ve made the suggestion to my gig buddy, so hopefully I’ll get to see her.
Just seconding this. Can’t see it attracting many new fans (he’s not exactly Mr bombastic but this is particularly laid back and low key) but I still think it’s beautiful. Lyin’ and Strangers are really touching pieces
Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer - Different Rooms
This is excellent - follow up to their ‘Recordings From The Aland Islands’ masterpiece, and their collab with Ariel Kalma last year. Live improvisation, field recordings, and in-studio experimentation. Features Jeff Parker on guitar.
International Anthem’s 3 week streaming delay means I’ll once again not know whether to vote for this in June or July’s album of the month thread…
