yeah she’s good
Went to see her in Edinburgh a few years back. She was entertaining enough, or at least her dancer was.
It absolutely is not necessary, today more so than ever. As I said above, she’s one of my favourite recording artists at the moment. I was hugely disappointed by the show I went to but that hasn’t resulted in me listening to or listening to her records any less than before. Just means I probably wouldn’t spend £30 to go to one of her shows unless something convinced that she’d improved as a live performer
Think there are quite a few artist from all genres of music who are studio wizards but don’t match up live. She’s not alone in that sense.
Haven’t seen any recordings of it, but her singing at that performance was just flat out bad. Lots of missed notes - ironically probably the best performed song of the set was World Princess, which she introduced by saying she usually missed notes. Nailed that one but the singing for the most part was really bad. Saying that not as a hater but an avid fan of her record who was left cringing and disappointed at the lack of quality compared to the other things I saw that weekend.
Her backup singer, in contrast, was actually pretty good, and tbh a lot of the time you could tell that she was the one holding things together as best she could.
Idk, maybe it was just a bad day at the office, but the video from her set at Coachella would suggest that it’s not an uncommon occurrence
I thought she was great earlier this year in Glasgow and again at Glastonbury but watching her Coachella set I did notice her live vocals can be hit and miss at times. It wouldn’t put me off seeing her again though and some songs Venus Fly sound far better live than on record.
Sounds really terrible and lazy based on the one track linked above.
Will not be investigating further.
Love last two albums - and when the music doesn’t quite hit me I’m still glad someone like her’s out there.
she writes, plays and produces everything herself. her sound is highly experimental and genuinely not bound by genre, although her latest stuff has been considerably more ‘pop’. probably a bad idea trying to get DiS to warm to grimes based on ‘realiti’ in the OP, imo.
I tried to get into her when around about the time of Visions as I think Genesis will always be a great song, but her clawing and forced image is just so irritating that I can’t. Plus with AA that aesthetic seems to have really seeped into her music… I don’t think it’s bad per se, but I just can’t get into it.
That’s OK. Not everyone is supposed to like her music.
Oh I listened to ≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈. Didn’t sound experimental or meaningful to me, although I am very probably sexist.
Maybe you’re not sexist, maybe you just don’t like her music. I’m not going to debate the subjectivity of the music taste.
maybe, I think I am a bit sexist though. Unfortunate part of my upbringing/environment
I find her videos a bit hit and miss- some of them are great and some make me cringe a bit, but I guess better to go for something ambitious and not quite get it than just continually play it safe. I’ve always loved the video for Oblivion though.
Yeah probably, like that song’s really lovely and it’s got a great atmosphere but the video’s just a bit silly. Guess that’s the point and maybe I’m missing the fun but yeah doesn’t do it for me.
I think it’s the combo of the song topic and the presentation of her being alone/lonely but essentially comfortable in her own skin in the hyper-macho sport setting.
I like her. Some bits of ‘Art Angels’ I’m not massively keen on, but it’s grown on me over time and some of it I think is actually closer to her earlier work than ‘Visions’ was. I’m looking forward to this ‘ambient’ album she’s supposed to be working on, too.
Oblivion was inspired by an awful experience of her life:
In your videos this year, you played with these clichés of powerful and powerless female archetypes. What was that about?
I was interested in the Japanese archetype of a female protagonist who is very small and very cute and very physically powerful. You don’t see that archetype in America. But in Japanese culture, there are female characters who can embody this girl uniform and still cut someone’s head off with a sword. “Oblivion” embodies that kind of archetype, going into this masculine world that is associated with sexual assault, but presented as something really welcoming and nice. The song’s sort of about being — I was assaulted and I had a really hard time engaging in any types of relationship with men, because I was just so terrified of men for a while.
Is it important for you to discuss what “Oblivion” is about?
It would be intense if it were an overwhelming part of my image. I can’t censor myself; it’s really important for me to say how I feel. I needed to put out this song. I needed to make this song. I took one of the most shattering experiences of my life and turned it into something I can build a career on and that allows me to travel the world. I play it live every night. The whole process has been positive — engaging with that subject matter and making it into something good.
Brilliant video that one.
[This thread caused me to remember Majical Cloudz exist, Impersonator was a fine album]
