Inspired by Trash Theory doing an updated and much more comprehensive look into everything that went into what eventually became punk (I might need to do a post version for everything that’s come since, not strictly meaning the genre itself).
So what’s your favourites? If we agree that New Rose is the first UK Punk Single, the Ramones self titled album as the first proper record and The Saints’ I’m Stranded as the last “proto” single then we can have anything you like before this moment

Yeah looking forward to giving that a look. It’s hard to say what really counts as proto punk because so much of the early stuff was so tied in with psychedelia and garage, then the NY scene of the Velvets, New York Dolls, Patti Smith etc. Some favourite arguably proto punk tunes, or at least from pre-77:
Yeahhh this is the shit. I only just found that She Does It Right song, it’s class look what a mad sub section of mid-70s UK pub rock was
You can play as fast and loose with the definition as you like, just wherever you can hear it and feels is a good example 
The Nerves were a huge link between garage and punk in 75-76
and obviously made more famous by blondie…
Would put this Bacharach & David cover from Love’s debut in there too
The original is so much better than Blondie’s there I said it. I found the original through this rather odd.if charming we indie film
I was genuinely about to ask if you’d consider Love in this
Like @Ruffers said, it’s hard to differentiate between psychedelia, straight pop and proto-punk/garage with Love. I think the way they could blend them all together was why they were so good tbh. Something like this off Forever Changes definitely fits the bill
