Love this song and the cover by Mike Watt. It ended up on a Sonic Youth side-project album.

Never thought Madonna would be one connection away to the lyrics “Our Band Could Be Your Life”.

Borderline

probably onto her first truly great song here. there really is something about her voice where it’s probably not technically great or even that good but it really is almost hypnotic in a way. what I like about this song the most is how the chorus doesn’t really ‘kick it up a notch’ but just follows the flow of the song. it’s a bit strange cause I don’t like Holiday as it doesn’t really go anywhere and nor does this but its an infinitely better song

  1. Borderline

  2. Lucky Star

  3. Everybody

  4. Burning Up/Physical Attraction

  5. Holiday

Easy top 3 Madge songs, just hearing the intro jolts me in the best way.

I’d be surprised by anyone who hadn’t heard Material Girl, Vogue, Like a Virgin and Like a Prayer - but beyond those I can buy it

Agreed on the flow of the song. Think a lot of my favourite pop songs have that

I LOVE BORDERLINE

Just had a quick look down her list of singles – ignoring the two from Evita, the American Pie cover, and the handful of early singles that I’ve now heard because TKC has covered them upthread, these are the ones I’m reasonably confident I would recognise:

  • Like a Virgin
  • Material Girl
  • Into the Groove
  • Like a Prayer
  • Vogue
  • Music
  • Die Another Day
  • American Life
  • Hollywood
  • Hung Up
  • 4 Minutes

So ignoring the 14 songs you know…

Out of nearly 100!

Same, remember it was a hit in America as it was featured in a chart rundown on Entertainment USA. It didn’t even make the top 40 on its first release in the UK which is mad. Nile Rodgers said years later she was pissed off it was a hit as she wanted to release Like A Virgin but the label wouldn’t let her and made her wait.

As a music nerd I find her story fascinating especially as she hung around with Andy Warhol and Keith Haring during this era.
