I’m at work having to listen to bloody Kate Thornton on Greatest Hits Radio. Awful state of affairs
loads of chat about it here
Like a Virgin
onto the second album now, only about 29494 to go. its sometimes weird when you actually sit down and listen to songs you’ve heard countless times before and properly listen because I never clocked how childlike her voice sounds in this. it actually gets a bit weird hearing her sing about virginity with this voice. i actually also don’t think the song has aged too well in the sense that much like Holiday for me, it doesnt really go anywhere. I like the ‘make me feel’ bit before the chorus and there’s a bridge where she does the woahohoh stuff and it feels like its going into interesting territory then it just resumes back. i will say though that my complaints about her earlier songs sounding cheesy due to the instruments, this has the same synthy drive but doesnt sound anywhere near as dated. i think its okay but if it didnt have that title it wouldn’t be anywhere near as remembered

Old Smoggy didn’t half come out the gates with the hits did she. On a listen I think this might be my favourite so far after Borderline. I can’t really explain why but there’s something just immensely listenable about it. The male vocals work really well and the chorus sounds massive. I really like the little guitar lick that crops up which is expanded on in the solo and its a Christnas miracle I’ve finally found a part Nile Rodgers plays which I don’t hate

I love Dear Jessie! If it had been a US single and on The Immaculate Collection it’d definitely be part of the canon.
Crazy For You
Its quite weird that just as the Like A Virgin hyoe trains setting off, Marge releases arguably her safest and most pedestrian song yet off the Vision Quest soundtrack. It sounds like the bottom tier weepie nonsense and that oboe sound is just the pits…but I still dont find it hateful. Weirdly, Madonna’s childish tone works more here as it makes the song a bit more playful than the schmaltz it is. It is shite though

Shite? 14 year old me, singing in my bedroom is furious right now.
I even bought the Visionquest soundtrack for this and Gambler. Don’t think i ever saw the film.
Grown up me concedes it’s not dated that well though.
