Same difference. It’s all good.
I struggle to remember where I hear things mentioned but the following three appeared on mixtapes or as part of Music League:
So, so many - here are three from random posts:
Bell Witch from the ‘Great Artwork’ thread.
worriedaboutsatan from the ‘Rolling Ambient/drone’ thread
Orso Orso from a random ‘weekly releases’ thread.
There are just so many though. Thanks DiS!

Probably the big ones that everyone on the Music boards consistently raves about - Idles, Slaves, The Vaccines…
That 2012 AOTY list was fertile territory
BLONDES
Chromatics
Swans
Sharon Van Etten…
All in the top 5. A generous shove to my music tastes in three different directions - I’d been drifting a little after the whole Indie / Electro boom at the end of the '00s died down.
From the forums themselves - the whole rolling ambient thread thing gave me loads to work through. Loscil and Brambles stand out in memory, but there are tonnes of others.
Some of my favourite albums of the last few years came from acts I hadn’t heard of before I saw people talking about them on this forum:
Skee Mask
Sault
Self Esteem
And that’s just the 'S’s!
Just about every week I hear one or more new albums which I like from the new release thread or others recommended by users here that I wouldn’t have found otherwise.
The really impressive list is the users whose recommendations have put me on to great new discoveries either through their tips or the threads that they run. Off the top of my head and in no particular order recently that includes:
@dantrobus @Gert @paulo @paulo13 @hankscorpio @incomplete @plasticniki @littlebirds @CHAIRMAN_LMAO @NeilYoung @GrandMoffTarkin @UncleRetrospective @BigAl @Funkhouser @BMS1 @Prob500 @Brainfreeze @TVDenimChap @FKA_Adam_Jeffson
And that is in no way comprehensive. It’s an unparalleled community for sharing music discoveries.
That Kessler ep is brilliant, thanks whoever recomended it
Alvvays!! Not only a band I love but a band that followed me around over the course of a relationship - from picking up Archie, Marry Me around the start of my last relationship (a very long time ago now) to bingeing Next of Kin when we broke up, and In Undertow when I finally had to make a break. (One of my favourite ever songs.) I was on antidepressants at the time but their London gig in September 2017 was the first time I felt like things were going to be ok in a long time, and then everything sorted itself out pretty quickly in the next few months.
Olivia Tremor Control is a big one so far this year. Dusk At Cubist Castle is awesome. (Was that you @thesewoodenideas ?)
Finally, @El_Merto’s DiS Eurovision earlier this year was one of the best things to happen on DiS and I got to listen to bangers from Haiti, Kyrgyzstan and Iran (as well as getting to grips with Kosovar rap/r&b for my own entrant!). My favourites were third-placed Pintandwefall from Finland, whose album I bought off Bandcamp as a result. Incredibly charming!
At some point - likely around the end of 2007 lists, I read Mike Diver’s review of Parades by Efterklang.
Re-reading it now and bloody hell is it still a great piece of writing - if you haven’t, do read the review and listen to the album
I seriously considered going to see them perform it live with an orchestra in Denmark but that turned out to be a little ambitious.
The other two I remember are when @NickDS recommended Tiny Moving Parts (emo), when the entire emo crew recommended The Hotelier (emo) and when @badmanreturns in a nice way forced everyone attending the Braid reunion gig to get there in time for Crash of Rhinos (emo).
Remember reading this review by Dom Gourlay and sourcing the album immediately - didn’t disappoint. What ever happened to these guys?
I didn’t! One to get to once I wean myself off my current earworms.
One that stands out is Charcoal by Brambles, I’ve found the exact post too. This description was enough for me to listen and then buy a copy on Bandcamp. It’s a beauty.
There is no way I would ever had found it without this site, so thanks DiS and if you are still here wonton thank you too
Uncountable. These forums are so inextricably linked to how I find out about and enjoy music, I honestly couldn’t tell you. [BIG SHOUT OUT FOR THE ROLLING AMBIENT MASSIV]
Snap! Not heard it in a while actually I shall rectify that tonight!
It can often not be specific recommendations or rave reviews but hearing a band’s name regularly mentioned here definitely means my ears prick up if I see it in the wider world or touring live. DiS seal of approval if you like. (Similarly mass dissent = avoid). I certainly remember not having the Menzingers on my radar at all until I saw them talked about here a lot, I just thought they were a really run of the mill pop punk band. Enough of a nudge to check them out and I am now a firm fan. Tons of bands have come through from the emo and heavy music threads too.
Yep - have tried to knock lots of my internet usage on the head - especially message boards - but DiS seems to be a constant. Weird that my main source of new rap music is an indie forum.
Have been hipped to loads and loads of great music here.
Just scrolling through my Spotify saved albums and see…
Sennen
Skee Mask
Deaf Center
Lord Apex
Cities Aviv
Loads of Miles Davis albums…
No Comment
All those Aphex Twins albums that someone compile from all the Soundcloud stuff…
And loads more.
Yes! I lurk in that thread a bit and have found some gems, including that.
