Swans

Good venue is it? Never been but I cannot miss the chance of seeing this iteration of Swans one last time.

I mean it’s essentially a big shed/small warehouse but I’ve always had a good time there. The sound has been pretty on point for each of the gigs, with pretty different styles too. However I do wonder if I like it because they put on so many gigs that appeal to my taste.

Sounds good. I’m sure Swans will sound immense in there.

Poster now has seven names on it so won’t be striped back as I assumed upthread as the poster only had four faces on it

Seven Swans a singing

Any thoughts on the new album?

I’ve only been able to scrape the surface, but feels good so far.

I listened to it once on Friday. Probably the most I’ve liked a Swans record on first listen since To Be Kind. If this really is the end of “big sound” Swans then I think the last track is a really nice way to leave it.

Agree with the comments above but need more than one listen. On that listen it sounded better than anything since To Be Kind at the very least though

I’m planning on diving in tomorrow, looking forward to it.

Listened to it a few times now. It really is a marvellous album. Very fitting way to end the ‘big sound’

Just show me an ocean and I’ll fart as it boils

Yeah, my first impression too. Had it on whilst working, so occasionally zoned out of what was happening only to be grabbed by a weird man droning “I AM THE BEST FUCKING FUCK YOU NEVER HAD” and other such insights. Feels like a keeper so far.

Where do they go next after “big sound”? Any stripping down is just going to feel sort of inadequate after the towers of sound they have been building.

They’ll strip it right down. Similar to their early 90’s output or Angels of Light

Yeah, that’s the thing. To me stripped down Swans is just Angels of Light. I am admittedly less familiar with their work pre-reformation though so maybe it isn’t entirely unprecedented

I love the angels of light records. Saw them at the borderline many many years ago.

Depends on your interpretation of their “big” sound, doesn’t it. At first I also thought they might go more mellow in the vein of AoL…but then leaving meaning/The Beggar weren’t worlds away from that either. Maybe they could go super stripped back no-wave industrial again? Would be easier to put together but is Gira up for that in his 70s?

Haven’t heard this yet as I want a good uninterrupted first listen, which should be possible Wednesday. Encouraged by above comments, reviews and the rateyourmusic score (although that site would always fawn over a Swans record).

What do people think of the first bit of “the merge”? Think I like it a lot less on a second listen. Like the idea of it but it just sounds a bit silly and flat, like something tool would do.

Come on now m9…
