I want to hear the unrestrained version!
(I mean I want to hear more about Alice Coltrane from you, somehow that phrasing came out ambiguous)
Me too! I really enjoyed the album that was on this list - a rare instance in this thread where I was left wanting more at the end.
Guys, if someone likes the Smashing Pumpkins itās fine. I might not go much on them myself but if another poster gets something out of them then good for them.
Aw no, I agree
I am absolutely going to town in the 391 records thread when The Crane Wife by The Decemberists comes round, which I know is nails-down-a-chalkboard for many.
Easy there Zach Braffā¦
Yeah this. Not really enjoying the thread descending into weird bullying tbh
Hey, I started this thread, and the last thing Iād want to do is for anyone to feel bullied (or feel that there was bullying going on).
The intention was no more than a light hearted joke, in keeping with a wider narrative about The Smashing Pumpkins (thereās a 1.5K thread dedicated to them so thereās plenty of engagement with them elsewhere). Though I regret using the words āoddly obsessiveā - that wasnāt right and Iām sorry for that.
Anyway, I didnāt massively enjoy MCATIS, but I didnāt hate it either, and Iām glad Iāve listened to it.
Yeah I know that you started it and itās been great. Just thought the discussion re the Smashing Pumpkins / MCATIS seemed a bit mean spirited. I donāt post here that often and I know that there is a fair bit of eye rolling every time SP are mentioned so it may be more of an in joke situation, but just felt that the different treatment that this record received seemed a bit targeted (shutting it down early followed by lots of posts saying how boring posts about MC were to read etc), particularly as there is a user who was probably looking forward to writing about and discussing the album (which I thought was the entire point of the thread). Think the general tone would also have put anyone else who wanted to talk about the record off as well, as any potential conversation relating to it was effectively shut down.
Anyway, like I say, perhaps thereās more to the whole Smashing Pumpkins dialogue that Iām not aware of, and no one who knows the background would have been offended, but just seemed a bit churlish to me and out of keeping with the rest of the thread. I also know this isnāt a forum that encourages bullying etc as well, so willing to accept that it may be me being oversensitive as opposed to anything else
Fair enough. The lines between discussing each album are pretty blurry, as is my scheduling for suggesting a new album. Iāll dial back on commenting on SP, and see how it progresses organically from here.
this is the generic SP thread which is at 2000 posts
Also this one (3600 posts)

Still not sure I totally understand tbh - is it that Smashing Pumpkins generate so much chat that it has to be corralled to specific parts of the site and isnāt tolerated elsewhere?
I think the fact there are 2 dedicated threads with thousands of posts, plus countless others that contain a lot of SP discussion are part of the reason people (myself included) were making the jokes we were making. Plus
They have been doing just that in this thread. So have others. And nobody is stopping them. Iām also certain that that user knows exactly what will happen when SP come up in these kinds of threads, and continues to post their opinions and links regardless, as they have for a long time now, so Iām not sure how much a few (admittedly tired) jokes will bother them.
Tbh that user and I disagree about pretty much everything and have clashed a lot in the past, but that perseverance in talking about their favourite band is something I respect about them and find admirably quite funny.
Yeah was more that I thought the general discussion around this particular record was shut down in a way that hasnāt happened with any of the others, and and they might have been looking forward to engaging with other users on it which effectively wasnāt allowed to happen. Just seemed a bit strange in a thread that was specifically set up to discuss records in. Obviously though thereās more background / site convention / etc. than Iām aware of, and if its not upsetting anyone else then Iāve got no reason to be tetchy either. Cheers for the explanation
tbh I was going to post a nice long post about that album but decided against it because I didnāt fancy the snark
Youāve never let the snark stop you in the past!
