I thought it was originally a channel about Christmas trees and he started reviewing music on the side.
I believe it was actually originally set up to a promote a local amnesty of drug paraphernalia.
Yeah like Home Alone is a 10/10 film to me. That’s just a sign of how much I love it and what it means to me - no one should get up in arms thinking I’m objectively claiming that it’s better than Vertigo or something
Fundamentally a 10 is just something you really really like, more than most other things
Also one of the very things I like about him most is that he’s just one guy with an opinion. Jsut a person talking about why they do or don’t like something is the best art criticism can really get imho
Good way of looking at it actually, might try and shift my mindset
Yeah I think it’s the objective ‘stance’ of a lot of reviews/reviewers/publications that’s left me with my funny 10 thing.
Like, I get that there’s such thing as a ‘formal’ aspect of art that some people have a deeper understanding of, but I think I’d like criticism to be more explicitly personal, especially year end lists. (Never understood the idea of labelling someone a ‘tryhard’ if they veered from consensus picks — why would we all like the same albums?)
I should add that I also don’t mean there’s anything wrong with loving a consensus pick.
Taste is so interesting and mysterious to me
If you really liked music then you’d be listening to music instead of this guy imo
This is where I’m at - don’t typically watch anything on youtube other than music videos, so haven’t seen a full video from this guy, and I’m kind of intrigued by the amount of chat in here l, but I can’t watch and listen to music at the same time but I can read a pitchfork (or Quietus or whatever) review whilst listening to something else, so probably never going to give any of his reviews a full watch.
Imagine how much more useful and enjoyable videos about music on YouTube would be if they actually had the music that they’re talking about in them.
I know WHY they don’t (money) but it does make it a weird experience listening to somebody describe something in an audio based format (usually with stock music underneath) without just hearing the damn thing itself.
He does reviews - they aren’t anything special and dont have any flare that demands you watch them.
There’s no need to change your consumption habits to check his reviews out of intrigue - I 'd feel you’d be disappointed. I just struggle to stay focused whilst I read so I naturally go to youtube critics.
I remember in the early early days there’d be an awkward silent few seconds of Fantano wearing headphones and going ‘hmm’ while listening to something before starting his review.
Dunno if he still does it but if not, he should, it’s funnier than his other bits.
Sometimes he does this but speeds it up.
I don’t actually watch any of his proper reviews but he does play clips on some of his personal/second channel stuff eg this one
He does that on his live streams on Twitch. No idea if he also streams on youtube. Dont watch them but see the sped up versions from time time when a major single drops which is when hell poat those on his channel
He’s a bit harsh on the Wetleg album (6/10) he doesn’t seem to like British guitar bands that much does he. I seem to remember Fontaines DC getting a poor review from him.
At it klaxon!
Ahahahahaha!
When I first heard of them I thought they were American, named after fountains in the District of Columbia
Nah, this record absolutely slays. Not something I revisit often but it always flaws me.
I think the one thing I like about him is that he has equal respect for pop and more obscure music, and doesn’t disregard anything based on superficial things, and has generally been consistent on that where pitchfork moved from hyping white boys with guitar to saying music is better the further you get away from white boys with guitars pretty much overnight
Gave the new Alex G a 5/10 there which is bad and wrong imho, he’ll revise that in years to come.
