I like his ‘pathetic’ series on yorke and disturbed dave, but then remember he gave a halsey 1/10 and said she had ‘main character energey’ for writing about being diagnosed with cancer and struggling with the possibility of dying and leaving her children without a mother

With quite uncanny timing, he put this out yesterday which addresses this.
And the answer is, of course, vexatious copyright claims from the music industry, the time it takes to fight them off, and the impact it can have on revenue.
It’s interesting though cos loads of people I follow do videos about visual media - films, TV shows, other social media/YouTubers - and they seem to get away with it. And while not doing Mr Beast numbers, some of them have subscriber numbers in the millions. So is that part of the media industry just a bit chiller about these things? More accepting of fair use? Even more interesting given how many of them are in the same corporate umbrellas as the major record labels.

I saw a response to Beato from KDH awhile back that made the case that licensing is a major revenue stream for music, and while Beato might appear to be fair use for education purposes he does also use his videos to promote the various paid courses he sells, so could be seen as using music for free in his advertising. So maybe it is something around that as visual media isn’t frequently licensed in the same way. Doesn’t explain fantano though as reviews should be fair use and channels like trash theory and rock n roll true stories seem to get away with it so still confusing (haven’t watched the video as Beato makes me angry)

I made the mistake of watching one of his videos recently (about the bogus AI band), and ever since YT keeps bombarding me with recommendations from his channel. Loads of his stuff just seems to be “modern music is so shit” bilge for jaded boomers.

I’d love to have Beato’s job to be fair, he just listens to the current top 10, finds the key of the song on his guitar and plays along a bit, and then goes yeah shite I miss Nirvana.
