The Needle Drop (Anthony Fantano)

it’s the length of the video reviews that I don’t get. I don’t get the advantage of watching an 8 minute video over reading a printed review that basically says the same thing and takes maybe a minute to read

Your post by about introducing influences is a really good one…but I’m not aware of any that do it (I’m sure there are some…whether they’re any good is another point).

Yeah that’s definitely a part of where I struggle with it too. I could read a good portion of a magazines reviews section in that time, or possibly all of a days reviews on a website (and I could read them in my own voice in my head not a potentially annoying strangers’) And I could be listening to one of the albums at the same time. They do seem like a bit of an undertaking.

That’s a shame. I’d certainly be much more interested if they were seen to be taking advantage of the medium.

The fact that 4chan types worship him tells you all you need to know tbf

Interesting that this thread is running at the same time as the Morrissey one - there are a few parallels between the two. They’re both from very different eras, and so both are playing out in different ways, but both seem equally unlikely champions of the causes they are being fairly or unfairly associated with.

I don’t quite get the Fantano one - trying to skim read the Fader article made my headspin a bit as I don’t really understand the reference points. Not really clear what reddit, subreddit, memes or 4chan are, who Sargon is etc and I’m not sure it’s a rabbit hole I really want to dive into. I get the sense that some things are just ‘internet things’ which can really blow up in some small online corner of the world, but are really just one largely inconsequential clique butting skulls with another.

I do occasionally dip into Needledrop videos as his take can sometimes be quite insightful. If you can wade through the really irritating elements it can sometimes lead to other interesting discoveries. For all his faults, he tends to stick with artists for the course and so I think he’s quite good at contextualising their latest release. For example, I tend to look out for his Kozelek reviews for this reason.

I’m almost 99% sure it’s all memes being memes and as alluded to in the article it was to help support his channel financially and that kind of shit gets hits. But sadly if it’s being seen by impressionable young people the amount of negative influence it could have is huge and it also reassures the beliefs of the alt-right whether that’s the intention or not.

I personally like his reviews and he’s got a taste that matches nicely with mine but the whole things leaves me very conflicted.

I think as much as you possibly can, try not to learn anything about reddits, subreddits, memes and 4chan, if you can possibly help it. Your life will remain immensely richer and happier for it.

It’s a rabbit hole full of dead bunnies and rotting bunny shit.

I get that from a personal sanity point of view but I also feel like I should educate myself as it feels like this stuff, which just felt to me (and I’m guessing many others my age and older) as just some inconsequential fad, is and indeed already has had an impact on the world that is only just becoming apparent. I mean maybe he is being deliberately falsely naive but it feels like even Mark Zukerberg hadn’t really grasped the impact of all this stuff.

By educating myself I mean actually reading about what is going on written by people who are knowledgable and objective not becoming a member of 4Chan (if that is a thing).

Angela Nagle’s did a book about this called Kill All Normies

Also there was a pretty decent episode of Chapo’s Trap House she appeared on where this was covered

Subreddits are full of some of the funniest stuff I’ve seen in the last few years, don’t go lumping them all in together

They’re all a poor man’s DiS

In this case it’s a very annoying stranger indeed.

Starting out his reviews were much shorter.

This is an excellent article on the rise of the alt-right focussing on Milo, Gamergate and how Breitbart became a conduit between 4chan shitposters and actual fascists. Sadly all this stuff might sound like silly internet bollocks but has a much wider impact. The energy of these angry white keyboard warriors is being harnessed by much more sinister interests.

Fantano is most likely just a useful idiot rather than a full blown fascist. But while he may well be a very fine music critic (tbh I’ve not spent enough time with his work to have an opinion) by rubbing shoulders with MRA psychos, racists and the like he’s lending his tacit approval to some very nasty people, and with them a dangerous movement.

who would’ve guessed that Milo would be the one to type more professionally than Bannon?
