The Substance

Good little video essay on this imho

look forward to watching this

also beyond the gendered element there’s also a way that actually old people generally are used as real gross-out things in some horrors that just annoys me - X and Barbarian both suffered from that despite their other merits

I’m reading this at the moment…

Classic duplicated present situation

not watched this vid yet but I did think there was some connection with Baby Jane re: hag horror, but that film has a more classical psychological basis ie. possible abuse combined with jealousy and impaired development. Both films possibly have more interesting things to say on disability than ā€˜old women in society’.

Felt slightly like I had seen this film or read this story 10+ times before and it was just getting all the hype because of Demi Moore. Her and Qualley were great and it looked great but there was far far too much of it, and it nevee got quite disgusting enough for my tastes.

Revenge the much better film imo.

Watched this last night. Thought it was good. Bit long. Cheers.

Think it would have worked better if it had been an hour long, maybe a black mirror episode or something

Cant wait for The Substance 2: Under The Skin!!

Up to $78 million box office now

Think it’s just the right sweet spot of having a clever idea/script, but a big enough star and slick enough for people not to pigeonhole as arthouse. Special film in that way.

is there really a big star in it though? Demi Moore hasn’t been one since 1997 or thereabouts. I think it’s just really struck a chord with horror fans outside the US (apparently it’s done really well in Mexico for instance)

People like my Ma knows who Demi Moore is and in that regard I still consider her a household name.

lot of hype around Margaret Qualley

that didn’t do Drive Away Dolls or Kinds of Kindness much good though. (OK, the latter wasn’t exactly a crowdpleaser). But she’s not like say, a Jennifer Lawrence or Timothee Chalamet or Zendaya, with The Substance the film and how batshit it gets is the real selling point

Good stuff.

I think it may also have a pleasing colour palette and a certain glossy sheen which a lot of people are craving to see on a big screen.
