Still excited, but obviously would be a lot more excited if our trip had come off.

absolutely certain it’ll happen, even without some countries and events if they need to.

Some are withdrawing already

yeah I know.

Really gutted about this. Think the events with loads of fans would have been great.

Will happen in a reduced format (fewer events/countries and no fans)

Quite like the idea of it happening with no fans and looking like a glorified school sports day.

oof

That’s bad wording/translation on the tweet. Suga actually said that it’s possible the Games may go ahead without spectators.

They’ve done the same with the headline, here, but the article itself makes it clear what he said

ohhh. that is bad wording

The announcement scheduled for today has now been made

Really don’t want this to be a big damp squib but my hopes aren’t high.

What does a 100m final with no fans seem like?

Has Japan not made much headway with vaccinating the population then? I find that quite baffling

I was going to say I’m surprised the FBPE types aren’t demanding we move the Olympics to London and regain that 2012 utopia spirit, but then I remembered the FBPE types are too busy saying it won’t be safe to leave the house again until 2023 anyway

They only approved Modena and AZ last month and have had supply chain issues with Pfizer.

Apparently nobody is listening to my brilliant idea of just cancelling them and giving Tokyo 2024, Paris 2028 etc.

^this.

Japan only approves vaccines after they have been trialled on Japanese people, so they are several months behind the other countries where the vaccines were trialled, or where they have an approvals process that lets them use data from overseas.

I believe there’s some incredibly boring problem with this about contracts having been signed etc.

I’ll obvs still watch but feel bad for the athletes. Lots of them sort of feed off crowd energy or being in a space that feels competitive, I guess. Doing it in a draughty stadium like a training session will be so disappointing.

Interesting to see if they’ll put crowd noise over it on TV or just have it as a tumbleweed.
