What's Their Best Song? #14: The Smiths

More votes for this one please.

When is deadline?vI will be putting in a vote

Just kingmakered Frankly Mr Shankly

Think this band got completely ruined for me not just because of the racist man, but when Joey Barton started quoting the lyrics everywhere (on twitter)

In every one of these threads so far I’ve kinged my choice (h/t Kenneth Arrow) but this is the first where it’s actually impossible to choose just 1 song above all others. Just too many great & important riffs & lyrics & stage props & that

Just a complete band & a phenomenon really. Hard to break it down to individual tunes

Funky I got a big job interview this week I need to be prepping for. Once the weekend hits, there’s a big pile of votes coming your way I promise you. Been doing a lot of Smiths listening (on CDs and records so Morrissey doesn’t make any money)

I believe in you. Also good luck!

I don’t like The Smiths. Not sure how much of it is Morrissey’s voice which really grates on me - I’ve not dig deep enough to see if I like the music by itself.

I want Strangeways and Vauxhall and I on vinyl but I don’t want to give Moz money

I think will be able to enjoy this album again once he dies

Listened recently. Still think it’s totally brilliant. My relationship with Moz hasn’t changed that much tbh cos even though I was obsessed as a teenager, I always kinda feared and disliked him.

Don’t think I’ve contributed to Moz’s coffers since You Are The Quarry. Bought all the Smiths albums when I was in my teens and never been super fussed about Moz’s solo back catalogue so only have a few CDs, most of which were 2nd hand.

Got Strangeways from a local place for £3 second hand - though pretty scratched up so there’s an accidental locked groove after I Started Something

Running through the albums for this and Meat is Murder is pretty shit really, isn’t it. Well I Wonder - Barbarism - Meat is Murder is a great run to finish the album, but the the latter two are far, far too long to be truly great.

Nahhhhhh. First half’s got some of their best tunes - Headmaster Ritual, I Want the One I Can’t Have and What She Said are all bops, and That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore is one of their most haunting.

Far, far prefer first half to the second, which I’m not a massive fan of apart from Barbarism.

Yeah perhaps it just didn’t hit today, I’ll relisten tomorrow. I Want the One I Can’t Have is a tune, admittedly but I don’t know, this album just kind of washes over me a little.

Hot take: The Smiths were a singles band rather than an album one. None of the albums are essential if you get a Best Of

Prefer this to the original

I’d perhaps give you that they never made an out and out classic as they’ve all got a dud track or two on them, but every album has tracks on it that weren’t singles and are amongst their best, so can’t accept this take.

This is my take also
