🐠 The Neptune Music Prize 2018 - Vote Now! 🐟

As Sean is unavailable today, I’m posting this to get it online today (with his blessing) so we can start the ball rolling on the annual NEPTUNE MUSIC PRIZE!

Yes, It’s time again for our annual alternative to the Mercury Music Prize, to highlight some really special records that we love, and to have a public vote to see which one you rate the best.

As per previous years, we’ve used the same eligibility criteria (albums by British and Irish artists with a UK digital release date between 22 July 2017 and 20 July 2018) and haven’t included anyone who was nominated for the Mercury.

One vote each. Hopefully you’ll find a record you’ve not heard before that you go on to adore (that’s the real point of this). In alphabetical order, the nominees are:

  • Baxter Dury - Prince Of Thieves
  • Bicep - Bicep
  • Boy Azooga - 1, 2, Kung Fu!
  • Four Tet - New Energy
  • Ghostpoet - Dark Days + CanapĆ©s
  • Gnod - Chapel Perilous
  • Goat Girl - Goat Girl
  • Gwenno - Le Kov
  • Hannah Peel - Mary Casio: Journey To Cassiopeia
  • Jon Hopkins - Immunity
  • Let’s Eat Grandma - I’m All Ears
  • Manic Street Preachers - Resistance Is Futile
  • Mastersystem - Dance Music
  • Nabihah Iqbal - Weighing Of The Heart
  • Rae Morris - Someone Out There
  • Rolo Tomassi - Time Will Die And Love Will Bury It
  • Shame - Songs Of Praise
  • SOPHIE - Oil Of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides
  • The Orielles - Silver Dollar Moment
  • Young Fathers - Cocoa Sugar

Voting close at Midnight on Sunday 30th September, so there’s plenty of time to get acquainted with all 20.

Can James Holden & the animal spirits be added to this list please?

Everything Everything

Great to see Rae Morris on this list even if my vote went to LEG.

Would have voted for young fathers but they won Scottish album awards already and I think the master system album has been a little underappreciated.

Sean usually does a discussion about what should go onto the Neptune list so everyone has a bit of involvement instead of just publishing a vote list. I would’ve picked Pesimist too.

Here From Where We Are by Pariah was release a week before the cut-off, I would vote for that.

Time has been a bit short this year and both him and I have been manically busy. So, between us and Andrzej and Dom, we thrashed out what we thought were the best 20. Of course, some people’s favourites miss out - that can’t be helped. But we stand by these being 20 outstanding albums, all of which deserve acclaim (and listens).

Real lack of Disintegration State material on this list

My third favourite album by a British artist in 2017/18 is on the list so I’ll be voting for that. However there are some weak albums on this list. I appreciate your time in creating it but Bicep, Shame and Jon Hopkins are never better than Mogwai, James Holden and Pessimist.

That’s because it’s all trash

Well, you know what they say about opinions…

Nor are the ones you prefer objectively better than the ones on the list though

John Hopkins one is recycled preset garbage though :upside_down_face:

You’ve made some powerful enemies today Rich. I’m gonna compose an 18 minute long drone diss track. Then you’ll be sorry.
