As Sean is unavailable today, Iโ€™m posting this to get it online today (with his blessing) so we can start the ball rolling on the annual NEPTUNE MUSIC PRIZE!

Yes, Itโ€™s time again for our annual alternative to the Mercury Music Prize, to highlight some really special records that we love, and to have a public vote to see which one you rate the best.

As per previous years, weโ€™ve used the same eligibility criteria (albums by British and Irish artists with a UK digital release date between 22 July 2017 and 20 July 2018) and havenโ€™t included anyone who was nominated for the Mercury.

One vote each. Hopefully youโ€™ll find a record youโ€™ve not heard before that you go on to adore (thatโ€™s the real point of this). In alphabetical order, the nominees are:

  • Baxter Dury - Prince Of Thieves
  • Bicep - Bicep
  • Boy Azooga - 1, 2, Kung Fu!
  • Four Tet - New Energy
  • Ghostpoet - Dark Days + Canapรฉs
  • Gnod - Chapel Perilous
  • Goat Girl - Goat Girl
  • Gwenno - Le Kov
  • Hannah Peel - Mary Casio: Journey To Cassiopeia
  • Jon Hopkins - Immunity
  • Letโ€™s Eat Grandma - Iโ€™m All Ears
  • Manic Street Preachers - Resistance Is Futile
  • Mastersystem - Dance Music
  • Nabihah Iqbal - Weighing Of The Heart
  • Rae Morris - Someone Out There
  • Rolo Tomassi - Time Will Die And Love Will Bury It
  • Shame - Songs Of Praise
  • SOPHIE - Oil Of Every Pearlโ€™s Un-Insides
  • The Orielles - Silver Dollar Moment
  • Young Fathers - Cocoa Sugar

Voting close at Midnight on Sunday 30th September, so thereโ€™s plenty of time to get acquainted with all 20.

#2

Can James Holden & the animal spirits be added to this list please?

#3

I would also vote for this

#4

Hookworms

#5

Everything Everything

Great to see Rae Morris on this list even if my vote went to LEG.

#6

Would have voted for young fathers but they won Scottish album awards already and I think the master system album has been a little underappreciated.

#7

Sean usually does a discussion about what should go onto the Neptune list so everyone has a bit of involvement instead of just publishing a vote list. I wouldโ€™ve picked Pesimist too.

#8

Here From Where We Are by Pariah was release a week before the cut-off, I would vote for that.

#9

Absolutely love the Mastersystem album but havenโ€™t been able to listen to it in a long time given whatโ€™s happened.
Bird Is Bored Of Flying breaks my heart.

Time has been a bit short this year and both him and I have been manically busy. So, between us and Andrzej and Dom, we thrashed out what we thought were the best 20. Of course, some peopleโ€™s favourites miss out - that canโ€™t be helped. But we stand by these being 20 outstanding albums, all of which deserve acclaim (and listens).

#11

No Mogwai, Aidan Moffatt & RM Hubert, Kathryn Jospeh or Outlines?
:astonished:

#12

Yeah Mogwai is a great shout.

#13

Real lack of Disintegration State material on this list

#14

My third favourite album by a British artist in 2017/18 is on the list so Iโ€™ll be voting for that. However there are some weak albums on this list. I appreciate your time in creating it but Bicep, Shame and Jon Hopkins are never better than Mogwai, James Holden and Pessimist.

#15

Thatโ€™s because itโ€™s all trash

#16

Well, you know what they say about opinionsโ€ฆ

#17

Nor are the ones you prefer objectively better than the ones on the list though

John Hopkins one is recycled preset garbage though :upside_down_face:

#18

Youโ€™ve made some powerful enemies today Rich. Iโ€™m gonna compose an 18 minute long drone diss track. Then youโ€™ll be sorry.

#19

Records a vocal sample of โ€œRichard is a dweebโ€ and timestretches it

#20

Has to be LEG
