Would obviously be Hookworms. But Young Fathers a very, very worthy substitute.

This is a judging panel I could get behind
Charlie XCX is the big omission for me, but hey I can make my own list. Will listen to the ones I’ve not heard and get back to yer.
Listening to Let’s Eat Grandma for the first time off the back of this thread - it’s pretty lovely eh…
Just wait for the closer ![]()
Still reluctant to listen to a band called Let’s Eat Grandma tbh.
Though I’ve avoided bands with shit names before and eventually gone on to love them
Strong album but not my favourite on the list.
It sounds like the ting tings though.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
It goes to Let’s Eat Grandma for me because I went into it quite cynical, I wasn’t a fan of the singles and thought they had “sold out” as it were; shed all their weirdness and experimentation of the first record and were going down a generic modern pop route, was thinking “ah damn it now they realise they can make money they’re getting with trendy producers and polishing everything up urgh fuck sake” etc.
Very quickly realised I was quite silly to think this way, it is very much a pop record to me but is much more subtle in its weirdness than those singles let on, the difference between seeing someone wacky at a party and someone who you get to know quite intimately and slowly reveal their idiosyncrasies. Record flows very well and by the end of “Donnie Darko” mentally I’m somewhere quite different from where i started, in the best possible way. Struggle to think of any other record that has done that to me in the last 5 years, let alone this. So yeah that’s why I’m picking them.
Nah, it sounds like an album of 50% bangers (if CHRVCVHVEVS were actually on their game) and 40% sprawling dance epics (with 10% ballads and well placed interludes). Really focused piece of work and all the more impressive for their youth at the time they recorded it.
I love the guitar line in Donnie Darko reminds me of G R E A T W A V E S

It straddles a very rare line between being thrilling pop and having enough intricacies to reward many many repeat listens.
almost voted for Nabihah Iqbal and now I wish I had, so sad to see her stranded on no votes.
I do like the Four Tet album more, though
bit surprised to see a Manic Street Preachers album doing so well in 2018
Oooo look at Mr “playing multiple notes at once”. Muso.
Wash your mouth out with soap
Ok it sounds like the xx crossed with ting tings. Not in a good way either.
Yeah I avoided them for ages coz of their stupid name but gave this record a spin because of this lot banging on about them. It’s a very good record.
Their names still sucks though
avoided King Gizzard for ages before hearing them on 6music and realising i was very very wrong to do so. might look up a couple of LEG singles to see if it’s worth it
