Why do you think there aren't more new posters getting involved? social board specific chat

For what it’s worth, as a ‘new’ person, the two of you (em and nr) seem to be involved in the threads I like reading. Of course I don’t think anyone should stick around/put up with unacceptable shit because I enjoy your comments and am interested in your opinions…

I can reckon I can turn down the negative ‘bants’ if it’s putting people off.

I want this place to be more inclusive so I’ll check my tone and content in future.

Same, threads like these are good for some perspective

I;m not sure exactly. a variety of reasons. but in the grand scheme of things, it probably comes down to this being a waste of time. wasting time is the reason most people are here. the ones who leave/post less probably have just found something better to do. or a job they don’t hate, etc, etc.

that’s nice of you to say, but I mostly post total bullshit, I’m afraid

^this

most people aren’t interested in serious conversations, so it breeds absolute nonsense, and because people “know” each other, it turns into a clique and then this circle where no one new stays, because it’s a clique

aside from calling people out when they post something awful i am not sure what more we can do?

I dunno, I mean people waste time with Twitter and Facebook and stuff, and there’s plenty of interesting stuff on those (depending on who you follow I guess- maybe I just know good interesting people)

i meant more that you can’t be like “guys, thoses topics are shite, let’s try to post more interesting stuff” because this is what the forum has, organically, bred (does that make sense?)

I genuinely don’t think forums are that popular in general bar reddit I don’t really know anyone who regularly reads or contributes to any forums.

I also feel like DiS was started well before other more pervasive social media because more widely used.

*became more widely used even.

It is rare I post the same thing on here as on Twitter and FB. Twitter and FB themselves are for completely different sorts of posts too, for me.

fair enough, I guess. if you hate everyone and think it’s boring, that’s fine; there’s no reason to stay if you don’t want to. I’ll just say I like it when people do post interesting stuff, and I think there are other people who do as well (even though it seems like there are fewer than there used to be).

It’s not that I hate everyone, there are nice people about. It’s just that the not so nice people are very dominant and loud and just suddenly take over, and stuff seems to turn nasty very quickly.

always makes me laugh people who moan about thread sbeing boring and insulting the users on here when they don’t bother starting topics themselves or doing anything to change it. don’t really see point of sitting on a forum moaning about it, just log off if you’re that arsed

There are a fair bit of woman on here. Much more then some other forums I’ve been on. I do agree that some of the posts get quite laddish though.

But what is perhaps more annoying thing in the boards (particularly the old ones) is the passive aggressiveness and making fun of things that are only slightly outside the parameters of what is considered normal.

But the again the #ssp hash tag does work and hasn’t had the piss taken out of or been followed by an aggressive backlash. Which really does happen in a lot of the internet. It has a depression thread that is actually taken seriously with very open talks about people in a really tough parts of their lives. Very few open forums focused around a single intreast have that.

The social boards are a space largely used by bored people in office jobs and it reflects that. Im not someone very close to that life and it is sometimes very clear that most are richer and in more stable employment then me.

But if you really believe that the attitudes are anything like those in 4chan I don’t know what to say. I’ve not seen any doxing and pitchforks out for people they disagree with. A few childish jokes aside the environment is fundamentally different. Even if it perhaps has a more laddish or mean spirited culture then you or I would like.

As for the unbelievably mundane topics I quite like them (as long as they don’t become cesspits of self parody) there is something quite British about them and they have a lightness about them that isn’t found that often elsewhere. But anyway I mostly stick to the music forums.

I half agree with you.

It annoys me when people say the boards are shit or boring when they’re contributing fuck all themselves.

But, it’s entirely legitimate for someone to say that they find the boards offensive or exclusive.

She’s also posted a lot on these new boards, FWIW.

how do you determine what is offensive and what isn’t though? genuine question, man. not looking to rattle any cages

@1101010 thoughts?

Something can offend one person and not offend another.

well yeah. come on, man…you know what I mean. you’re a sensible guy. WHO determines on THESE boards what is and what isn’t acceptable
