It’s The Velvet Underground & Nico this week. Seen as one of the most influential albums of all time despite bombing on release, how good is it really?
The first time I heard Venus In Furs it became my favourite piece of music for at least a year. Bought the album the next day. There is an argument that it somehow isn’t even the second best thing on there.
I used to fucking love this record and listen to it all the time but now I hardly ever do. Weird. Prefer the self titled album cause it’s got Pale Blue Eyes on but this can still have a 10.
Impossible to choose between about 6 different favourite songs on this record
Also, I’ve given it a 9 because I don’t think a 10/10 record exists but it’s really, really hard to put into context what an utterly groundbreaking release & artistic statement this record is. It’s probably one of the dozen or so LPs that deserves a 10 if we’re marking on the curve but just can’t quite bring myself to put it on the same level as What’s Going On or Headhunters or Purple Rain
Incredibly influential. Paraphrasing here but I think the quote goes something like, ‘it didn’t sell many albums upon its release but everyone who did buy it formed a band’
