The week is the Lemonheads - It’s A Shame About Ray. It’s less than half an hour long if you ignore the tacked on Mrs Robinson cover (which you should) so go on, give it a listen if you haven’t heard it already
Really liked it at the time and don’t mind Mrs Robinson (even though I kind of hate S&G tbh).
I don’t listen to it regularly but on the odd occasion when I’ve gone back to it I’ve been surprised how well it has stood up.
Think they’re a band who operate on a bit of a razors edge - when they get it right it is breezy and engaging and combines a slight melancholy and sense of longing but with a brightness that prevents it from being maudlin. But it’s a fine line and they can easily sound very slight, cliched and just a bit naff.
I know there are plenty of fans of the earlier stuff and the later stuff but for me they only really got it right with this album, the odd E.P. and maybe 90% of Come On.
this is what i’ve thought when listening to them before. Like @Scagden said in the Pearl Jam thread, I’d be a bit surprised if anyone told me they were their favourite band in 2021; without saying they’re bad at all I’m just surprised they’d evoke that level of emotion still
I got into them originally through the reunion album because of the J Mascis feature and members of All/Descendants being part of the recording process. That’s an uneven album but I liked the extra punch it had compared to what I know of their 90s output
